The TestDriive

Description

About Project

The project focus was two-fold:

For Users, The Client wanted to create a self-managed automotive marketplace which allowed users to find cars, save cars, get directions, connect with sellers and if they choose, to sell their own cars. Additionally, the client wanted the site to highlight environmentally friendly cars as well create a safe sales environment for all of this to happen.

For Dealers, the Client wanted to create a marketing system which would empower small dealers to sell more with better resources. The goal was to provide technological advantages preciously not available to small dealers. Dealers would be able to connect with potential buyers, provide video and messaging options, allow dealers to set appointments, receive information, educate buyers, receive requests and to track and manage information better than they could using other tools available.

The Brief

Presently the space is dominated by larger more entrenched players like Cars.com, Auto Trader, and Car Gurus. The challenge was to create some unique features that would allow TestDriive to differentiate itself and gain acceptance and traction in a crowded marketplace. Believing that the testdrive is the most essential part of the car buying experience, we wanted to create a marketplace which allowed our partner dealers to showcase their products 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Challenge

Operating on a limited budget we wanted to create a site that could compete with the larger players in the arena. We realized our client was not funded by big business and would have to employ some older less costly marketing methods. We knew that success for our partners dealers would involve them rethinking the way they interact with their customers. We knew this would involve us taking steps to educate our end customer about the “smarter way” to buy cars on the internet. We understood that connection and communication would need to replace convenience and convention in the minds of car buyers. And realizing that thousands of potential buyers walk the aisles of dealerships daily our challenge was to create a system where each of them is valued. Where their business both future and present is courted.

Our Idea

We understood that this site had to be attractive, fast, and well organized. We knew that we were creating a we a new automotive marketplace for more than that we were creating a web-home for thousands of local businesses. This site would be the face of many of our small dealersand we wanted to make it visually stunning, easily navigable, and highly searchable.

Understanding that people who typically search for cars are operating in crisis mode and are generally car searching to meet an immediate need. Our idea was to assist dealers in courting buyers long before the crisis. Using our blogs and car request tools, and our partner inventory updates, we created a system where dealers can encourage and create connections with local buyers. Buyers will travel far or near to find the car they want and they would much prefer buy local from someone they trust.
